Manchester United are to hold further discussions over a deal for Sporting Lisbon midfielder Bruno Fernandes.

Despite being the subject of talks in London on Friday, Fernandes started Sporting’s 3-1 win over Vitoria on Saturday night and scored twice.

During one of his celebrations he covered his ears with his hands, which may have been a gesture relating to the intense speculation over his future.
He also appeared emotional at the end of what could prove to be his final game for the Portuguese giants.
Speaking after Manchester United’s 4-0 win over Norwich earlier on Saturday, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said: ‘Bruno Fernandes? I can’t talk about individuals that play for other clubs, but I’ve got to say I do have backing.

‘We do have backing to do something if the right thing comes up in this window. The owners, Ed (Woodward), they know what we’re building towards.’
Sporting president Frederico Varandas and sports director Hugo Viana travelled back to Portugal for Sporting’s match against Vitoria after holding a meeting at United’s offices in London on Friday.
Fernandes started from the off for the Portuguese side and netted a brace, including one goal from the penalty spot and another in injury time.

Sportsmail revealed on Friday that the player’s agents were at United’s Mayfair offices for talks with Sporting’s hierarchy and United executives Ed Woodward and Matt Judge.
Solskjaer and assistant Mike Phelan were also believed to have been present for Sporting’s defeat against Porto recently, with the duo eager to strike a deal to bolster their threadbare squad at Old Trafford.
But the club’s top brass remain cautious about the switch, with Sporting notoriously difficult to negotiate with. There is optimism from the player’s camp, however, that a deal can be agreed.

The top-flight giants are also monitoring alternatives, although January is predictably a tough time to prise players away from their clubs.
Another United target, Ajax midfielder Donny van de Beek, was also questioned about his future on Saturday.
The Dutchman said: ‘I can’t or don’t want to do anything with it anyway. I have said before that I will play at Ajax this season. Maybe next season too.’
Van de Beek has an offer to join Real Madrid this summer.
